I'm sure you have a few questions...
1. What are the legal requirements for a wedding in Australia?
For your wedding to be legal, five things must occur during the ceremony:
-
The celebrant must be introduced as a wedding celebrant using their full name.
-
The couple’s full names must be said at least once.
-
The celebrant must read ‘The Monitum’ from the Marriage Act 1961.
-
The couple must exchange legal marriage vows. There’s room to be creative in the extended wording but vows must include, ‘I call upon the persons here present to witness that I, [eg Harry Edward Styles], take you, [eg Stephanie Patricia Clark] to be my lawful wedded wife/husband/partner in marriage.
-
Two witnesses over the age of 18 must be present and sign the relevant legal documentation.
2. What documents do we need to provide?
I need to sight either a valid passport or an original birth certificate so I can complete your Notice of Intended Marriage. If you have been married previously, I also need to sight original documentation proving how your last marriage ended (divorce or death certificate). Documents which are not in English will need to be translated for you by an accredited translator.
3. How much does a celebrant cost?
The fee differs according to the scale of ceremony and its location. A backyard elopement is easier on the budget than a big destination wedding. The fee reflects the boutique service I provide, the personalised ceremonies I create and the professional skills I bring. If you’d like to find out more, please get in touch for a tailored quote.
4. Do you only do weddings in Melbourne?
Definitely not. I travel to regional Victorian regions, or interstate if that’s your vision. We can meet and plan on digital platforms—whatever fits best with your pre-wedding schedule and availability. Bottom line: if it's in Australia, I can be there.
5. Do you book multiple weddings on the same day?
No. My promise to couples is they are my sole priority for their special day. I’m a one service per day celebrant. It’s all about you.
6. We got legally married overseas. Can you marry us again here?
No. Under Australian law you can only be married once. There’s no limit on great parties with family and friends though!
